Coach Rick Akey is passionate about continuous improvement and new experiences. “I love seeing the remarkable progress from the first day someone walks in nervous, searching for confidence, perhaps a little overwhelmed,” he says. “Each day they get better, more mobile, more fit, and stronger in both body and mind.”
A multi-sport athlete in high school, Rick earned Honorable Mention All-Catholic in Football. He played Division 3 Football at Marietta College, and later in life spent 10 years officiating youth football, basketball, and baseball. In 2006, he ran in the Philadelphia Marathon.
What brought him to coaching? “I was a regular globo gym member but desperately needed something new,” he says. “I tried CrossFit and immediately fell in love with it. After a couple of years as a CrossFit athlete, I wanted to learn more, get better at competitions, and help the box owners and members. I decided that getting my L1 certification was the best way to do that.”
When he’s not CrossFitting, he’s working. “In my other life, I design cloud computing solutions designed to bridge technology and business.” You may also find him on a road trip riding his 2011 Harley Davidson, working on home improvement projects, or playing with his two rescue dogs.
